※Attention※

Depending on the condition of the banknote (dirt, tears, scribble, etc.), the rate may be reduced or we may not be able to purchase it at all.

Egyptian pounds can be exchanged at the displayed rate x 100% for current banknotes issued after 2013, but notes of 50 pounds or less cannot be exchanged as they are small denominations.

Please inquire about other old bills and banknotes. Banknotes are often in particularly bad condition, so when receiving change, ask to exchange any notes that are too dirty.

Trivia:

One custom that impresses tourists in Egypt is the practice of baksheesh.

In Islam, it is called "charity" (the willingness to donate money or goods), and is required as a daily gratuity in addition to tips.

Giving too little is perceived as an insult, and giving too much will lead to excessive expectations, so care must be taken.

Since the shift to a floating exchange rate system in 2016, the value of the Egyptian pound has fallen sharply, so the highest denomination 200 pound notes are commonly used.

Egypt is one of the largest economies in Africa, and its main sources of foreign currency income are remittances from abroad, tourism revenue, and Suez Canal tolls.

In addition, increasing foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows is the most important policy for the government in order to cover the current account deficit and achieve a balance of payments surplus.

In 2010, the number of Japanese travelers (most of whom were tourists) reached a record high of approximately 126,000, but following the political upheaval in January 2011, the number of travelers in 2011 dropped to approximately 28,000.

Since then, the number has increased to approximately 39,000 in 2012, 31,000 in 2013, 12,000 in 2014, 16,000 in 2015, 19,000 in 2016, 33,000 in 2017, 42,000 in 2018, and 52,000 in 2019.

Due to travel restrictions, entry conditions, and behavioral restrictions imposed by the global COVID-19 pandemic, the number of travelers in 2020 was only 14,000, and in 2021 it was only 2,800, but with the easing of restrictions, the number is on the rise and is expected to recover to 11,000 in 2022.
