Since Hong Kong's sovereignty was returned to the People's Republic of China in 1997, the Hong Kong dollar has been under exchange control by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority.

During the 1997 Asian currency crisis, the Hong Kong dollar was sold to funds like other currencies, but the sold Hong Kong dollars were exchanged for US dollars, causing a sharp decline in the amount of Hong Kong dollars in circulation in the market and causing interest rates to soar to as high as 300%.

Unable to bear the interest burden on the Hong Kong dollars borrowed for short selling, the funds withdrew, and the Hong Kong dollar successfully defended its currency.

Since 2018, new series of banknotes have been issued one after another, and various anti-counterfeiting technologies have been added.

which is difficult to counterfeit and has excellent durability and waterproofness, and many countries are introducing it from low-denomination banknotes that are used frequently.
