In November 2016, in order to eliminate bribery and corruption, the government suspended the circulation of high-denomination banknotes of 500 and 1000 rupees. This caused some economic turmoil, but since September 2017 the rupee has been on an upward trend, and the turmoil appears to have been temporary. New 500 and 2000 rupee notes have been issued, but the 2000 rupee notes are now non-exchangeable. The de facto high-denomination banknote will be the 500 rupee note.
