Trivia:

Doha is famous for the Doha Tragedy, which occurred in the final FIFA World Cup Asian qualifying round in 1994.

At the end of the fourth match, Japan was leading their qualifying group in terms of points and winning percentage, and was on the brink of qualifying for their first World Cup finals.

In the final match against Iraq, Japan was leading 2-1 until the end of the game, but with just a few seconds left in added time, they conceded an equalizing goal from a corner kick.

As a result, Japan was tied with South Korea in points and lost on goal difference, finishing third in their qualifying group and was eliminated from the qualifying round.

Until 1966, the Indian rupee was used, but the currency was later changed to the Saudi Arabian riyal and then the Qatari Dubai riyal.

In 1973, the current Qatari riyal was introduced.

The current banknotes in circulation were partially revised by the Central Bank of Qatar in September 2007, and cornerstone watermarks, wide optics safety strips, and holograms were added to prevent counterfeiting.
