Austria is characterized by active exchanges in the field of music. Many Japanese students study music at institutions such as the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, and many renowned Japanese musicians are based in Austria. Furthermore, the world-famous Vienna Boys' Choir and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra regularly perform in Japan.

 

In recent years, many students have been influenced by Japanese pop culture, such as manga, and have begun studying Japanese. The University of Vienna, the only university in Austria with a Japanese studies department, enrolls approximately 200 students each year (including minors). Meanwhile, many Austrians are interested in traditional Japanese culture and martial arts, and Japanese food, such as sushi, matcha, and ramen, is also booming.

 

After the Great East Japan Earthquake, Austria donated a total of 1 million euros (approximately 115 million yen), as well as 20,000 blankets and 450 water containers through the EU. Many charity events were also held in the capital, Vienna.
