Relations between the two countries have traditionally been good, and it is widely known that Vice Consul Chiune Sugihara (who issued "Visas for Life" - transit visas to Japan - to Jewish refugees fleeing from Poland and other countries) worked at the Consulate in Kaunas before the warIn October 2001, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Chiune Sugihara's birth, cherry blossom trees were planted in the capital, Vilnius, and Kaunas, with President Adamkus also in attendance. As 2020 marks the 80th anniversary of Vice-Consul Sugihara issuing the "Visas for Life," it was designated the "Year of Chiune Sugihara" in Lithuania, with various related events taking place throughout the year.
